Daily dose, duration, total amount prescribed and pricing
Herbal formulas are prescribed specifically for each person after a detailed discussion of their symptoms and needs. Following a detailed consultation, the diagnosis and treatment aims are explained including the choice of formula best suited (raw herbs, pills or granulated herbs).
Written instructions including daily dosage of the herbal formula are provided and verbally explained to allow for clarification, including the cost.
Prescribing granulated herbal formulas
The total daily amount is calculated based on the number of dosages per day. This total daily amount can vary as do the number of doses per day.
The duration of use of the formula is then calculated, e.g.: 7-14 days, or longer.
For example, prescribing a daily amount of 8 grams, divided into two doses of 4 grams each over an estimated period of 2 weeks: 4 grams each time x 28 doses = total 112 grams.
Using a standard household teaspoon as a measure:
It is more practical to use a standard household teaspoon as a measure rather than weighing each dose on a kitchen scale. A rounded teaspoon = approximately 2.5-3 grams, while a heaped teaspoon = approximately 4 to 4.5grams.
I take into consideration that teaspoon sizes can vary, and that the overall daily dose can be approximate, so if a herbal formula prescribed for 14 days lasts between 12-16 days, this is within normal range (assuming each dose is taken).
In summary, the amount of a herbal formula prescribed is calculated based on the number of doses, the total daily amount, and the intended duration. The cost is calculated based on the total amount; the exact total weight.
Prescribing raw herbal formulas
Written instructions including daily dosage of the herbal formula are provided and verbally explained, including the cost.
As with granulated herbs, the number of packages of the raw herbs prescribed are calculated based on the number of doses, the total daily amount, and the intended duration. The cost is calculated based on the total number of packages/bags provided.
Prescribing herbal pills
Herbal pills are also prescribed based on the number of doses, the total daily amount, and the intended duration.
The standard number of pills per bottle is 200.
For example, prescribing 3 doses per day of 12 pills each time = 36 pills per day.
One bottle of 200 pills will therefore last 5.5 days.
